Re-use, Recycle, Recreate! Thursday, March 16th

Mar

7

2017

Bring us your broken, your rusted, your worn out objects destined for the trash…. for a chance to win an original piece of artwork by Vickie Morrow, Betsy Halford or Jane Nassano. We are three unique artists creating original artwork from found and discarded items. We invite you to come to our special exhibit, Re-use, Re-cycle… RE-CREATE! opening Thursday March 16th Artwalk, from 6-9pm, through Saturday, March 18th at 5pm. As ‘found object/assemblage’ artists, all three of us revel in rescuing bits and pieces of things no one would ever dream of reusing, believing that everything has artistic value.  Combining them with our own diverse visions and perspectives, in some crazy and interesting ways, results in very unique, thought provoking 2 and 3 dimensional art. One original ‘re-creation’ from each of us will be raffled off at the close of the show. Only those who bring us contributions for our cause, in the form of cracked or chipped china or dishes, old, broken or ugly jewelry (that single earring!), rusty metal anything, old books, vintage fabrics and leather, or anything from your junk drawer, will be given a raffle ticket for the drawing.    We’ll be demonstrating some of our techniques over the course of the show, including the use of encaustic (layered hot wax), assemblage, and mosaic, and working from our personal collections of re-cycled materials. Our show is open to everyone.  Families, kids, art students and would-be artists alike, can immerse themselves in the pleasures and possibilities of ‘trash to treasure’ art.

Visions: Vickie sees things not for what they are but for what they can be.  She gathers her materials in alleys, construction sites, yard and estate sales and receives “donations” from friends discarding most anything.  Things made in the USA give her a particular sense of pride.  She makes her own ceramic tiles and alters many pieces she finds.  "For me, making art is very uplifting especially if it can spark a memory or smile from the observer.”

Betsy’s inspiration comes from her dreams and meditations.  She’s also influenced by events going on in the world and her life.  “There is an emotional thread woven throughout my pieces reflecting part of me.  I have a general idea what I want to convey but let the process dictate where it goes.”  Part of this process involves disassembling old or vintage items, repurposing obsolete parts and incorporating paint, wax or any other elements the piece requires.

Jane’s favorite places to gather art materials are in the alleys and along the canals of her neighborhood.  “I take my dogs for walks and spend most of the time looking at the ground.  Finding rusty bottle caps or pieces of corroded metal get me really excited.  I come home with pockets bulging, full of old, broken things that people have dropped or thrown away.”  It is actually the pieces themselves that define her creations.  By randomly combining some of her favorite finds, the next creation magically comes forth. So, come and see an art show that’s entertaining and inspiring, and try to see what we see….. how to 'fill' an art gallery instead of a landfill!

WHO: Vickie Morrow, Betsy Halford and Jane Nassano.  Three artists saving the planet one bottle cap at a time! WHAT:  Re-use, Re-cycle…RE-CREATE!  Special Exhibit with Artists' Demonstrations WHERE: On the Edge Gallery, 7050 E. 5th Avenue, Old Town Scottsdale WHEN: March 16th-18th, 2017, Thursday 6-9pm, Friday and Saturday 10am-5pm. WHY: Do you really need to keep that ONE earring? You know that cracked teacup leaks right?  Are you really going to glue that vase back together again?  Bring us your broken…

 Henry Bosak, Acrylic Painting

 Inline image 1

Painting has always been Henry’s passion. Henry is a realist who paints “everyday things” such as an old pick-up truck or some well-worn tools. He paints to capture a moment or a feeling. Henry wants his work to inspire or bring joy to whoever sees it. If that happens, then he has accomplished one of his goals in life…being an artist.

To view Henry’s work, go to On The Edge Gallery’s website @ www.ontheedgegallery.com or visit his website @ www.henrybosak.com

 Cal Vander Kooi, Wood Turning

 Inline image 2

In Cal’s eyes, what used to be firewood is now a piece of raw material just waiting to be turned. He views each piece of wood as an individual. They may sit in his workshop for days, or even weeks, before he decides what should be made from them. Each piece he creates is a one of a kind. Even among sets, such as wine goblets, there is never an exact match. The combination of the peculiarities of the wood and working without patterns makes each piece ever so slightly different and beautiful in its own remarkable way.

“I endeavor to allow my artistic ability to guide my hands, to make forms of art and function, and to thoroughly enjoy the process of making something unique.” says Cal.

To view Cal’s work, go to On The Edge Gallery’s website @ www.ontheedgegallery.com  or visit his website @ www.calvanderkooi.com

Jan Stiles, Table Jewelry

Inline image 3

Jan designs jewelry and other handcrafted items that incorporate semi-precious gemstones. She is constantly exploring new materials and techniques and usually has several projects in different mediums going on at the same time.

“My “table jewelry” is another way to explore and use semi-precious stones in daily living. I see art as a way to both excite and calm the mind as well as a means of personal expression.”

To view Jan’s work, go to On The Edge Gallery’s website @ www.ontheedgegallery.com  or visit her website @ www.treselegantedesigns.com

 Valerie Hildebrand, Batik

 Inline image 4

Valerie has been fascinated with glass, inspired by batik, and thoroughly captivated by jewelry design and construction. She is constantly exploring various mediums and techniques and typically has several projects going at the same time.

“My version of batik is done on a variety of surfaces (not fabric) and includes a double resist process to impose a little more control on the wax since I tend to work with hard lines and geometric shapes. Most of my batik work uses traditional fabric dye but I have begun experimenting with using acrylic paint and the results of that adventure have been encouraging”, says Valerie.

ON THE EDGE GALLERY -- International ArtWalk July 7, 2016!

May

9

2016

Join us at On The Edge Gallery for the “International ArtWalk” on Thursday, July 7, 2016, from 6:00 PM – 9:30 PM as we celebrate art from around the globe.  You will have the opportunity to see how On the Edge Gallery artists are influenced by worldly art and cultures as they show their individuality through the beauty and style of their creations.

“We have an amazing group of diverse artists who have an incredible talent for grasping light and color that captivates the onlooker and takes them on a journey into places they have never imagined.” says On The Edge Gallery Artist, Rani Primmer.

On The Edge Gallery’s featured artists are Barbara Burke and Kelly Bowman.  Come and meet them and see how they have successfully accomplished the play of light and color to bring out the spirit in nature and animals.

Barbara Burke, Mixed media on paper

Barbara was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona. She enjoyed traveling with her family when she was young because it was an opportunity to experience the beautiful sights that nature provides.  In high school, Barbara and her sister Beverly were quite involved in the arts, designing and painting backdrops for theatrical productions.  A fourteen year career of being a flight attendant and modeling for American Airlines contributed to a vast portfolio of scenic impressions for future artistic creations. Barbara says, “Artistic talent is a gift that grows only when challenged. Whether painting the spirit of nature or painting nature with a free spirit, the key is experimentation and keeping an open mind."

Kelly Bowman, Acrylic

“I live, think, play, and am inspired by color,” states Kelly. “I cherish the colors of things in nature and surround myself with color.  In addition, I have always had a connection with animals. In particular, dogs and horses.”  Kelly combines this connection with color to create happy, energetic, touching, and telling portraits of animals. “As I look at animals, I can see the colors I need to make them come alive in an energetic and spirited way. Living in the Southwest has also given me a deeper appreciation for the colors seen in the desert along with the Western flavor of living.”

To view Kelly’s work you can go to On The Edge Gallery’s website @ www.ontheedgegallery.com  or visit her website @ www.rollinghorsestudio.com

ON THE EDGE GALLERY -- Video ArtWalk!

Bring your family and friends to On The Edge Gallery and enjoy the “Video ArtWalk” on Thursday, April 7, 2016, from 6:00 PM – 9:30 PM as we embrace the popular new trend of technology in the arts.

This is a unique opportunity see our featured artists share their creative process through  videos and images as they play with oils, mixed media, acrylics and more.

“The greatest insight into the spirit and voice of an art piece is to observe the creative process behind it,” states On The Edge Gallery Artist, Rani Primmer. “It is where the artist’s joys and sorrows, courage and fear, beliefs, inspirations, and visions all dance together to create incredible works of art.”

On The Edge Gallery’s featured artists are Jackie Roliardi, Victoria Monize, Kim Walker and Kelly Bowman.  Come and meet these extraordinary artists and gain insights into what inspires them and how that inspiration transforms into amazing art.

Jackie Roliardi, Acrylic, Collage, Mixed Media

Jackie’s latest work is abstract. She identifies with the Abstract Expressionists Movement, viewing art as an expression of what wants to come forth. Her work is a bold expression of layers of color and texture, which she applies first, and then strips away to reveal what needs to stay. Her latest series is influenced by both the landscape and light of the Southwest where she currently makes her home, and the beloved beaches of New England where she was raised. “My art is guided by the belief that what wants to come forth, will, and what needs to fall away, will” states Jackie.” It is how life and art renews itself. We must provide the space for this natural process to take form. The struggle ensues, when we resist that which is trying to find its way to us and are too fixed. It limits us in life and in art. “

Victoria Monize, Oil – Still Life

Truth:  Art is a communication from the heart of the artist to the heart of the viewer.
Truth:  Beauty is a universal language that speaks to everyone.
Truth:  Truth sees the beauty in all things.

“I dedicate my paintings to these truths,” says Victoria. “I see the world through the eyes of an artist, in wonder and awe of the beauty of nature, people and the creations of the world. By allowing my heart to communicate through my eyes and paintbrush, I live the joy of expressing color and light on canvas. Using vibrant strokes of paint I create paintings as a communication of the joy of living, of the appreciation of beauty that surrounds us and a celebration of the uniqueness of all sources of inspiration. My greatest desire is that the viewer will feel that joy, appreciation or celebration as an enhancement of their environment in the language of truth that speaks to their heart.”

Kim Walker, Mixed Media

Kim Walker is an internationally recognized and awarded artist.  Roughly sixteen years ago, while finishing up her Bachelor of Fine Art Degree from ASU, Kim developed her own unique style of painting that incorporates pressed flowers and natural elements.  Kim says, “Painting allows me the quiet and thoughtful internal dialogue that refreshes my spirit”.  Her mixed media paintings are intended to be a reverent reflection of the beauty, inspiration, and meaningful lessons found in the gifts of nature.  Her art is also meant to showcase the amazing gifts of nature in a new and unexpected realm.  She also pens an original poem for each of her mixed media compositions as a further expression of her gratitude for these amazing gifts.  She hand writes her poetry on the backs of each painting.  Kim’s art is represented in galleries and juried and invitational exhibits nationwide and it is included in private, corporate, and municipal collections all over the world.

To view Kim’s work you can go to On The Edge Gallery’s website @ www.ontheedgegallery.com  or visit her website @ www.kimwalkerart.com

Kelly Bowman, Acrylic

“I live, think, play, and am inspired by color,” states Kelly. “I cherish the colors of things in nature and surround myself with color.  In addition, I have always had a connection with animals. In particular, dogs and horses.  It only made sense to combine this connection with color to create happy, energetic, touching, and telling portraits of animals. As I look at animals, I can see the colors I need to make them come alive in an energetic and spirited way. Living in the Southwest has also given me a deeper appreciation for the colors seen in the desert along with the Western flavor of living.”

ON THE EDGE GALLERY -- New West ArtWalk!

Join On The Edge Gallery during the “New West ArtWalk” on Thursday, March 3, 2016, from 6:00 PM – 9:30 PM, in celebration of Scottsdale’s new Museum of the West and the native cultural heritage of the City.

See the west through the artful eyes of our diverse group of On The Edge Gallery artists, as they transform glass, gourds, found objects, paper, oil and other mediums into amazing creations that will speak to you.

“Every work of art has a story to tell”, says Katie Stearns, On The Edge Gallery Board President.  “Our artists have a unique and creative way of sharing those stories with you in both traditional and contemporary styles.”

On The Edge Gallery’s featured artists – Vickie Morrow, Margaret Sullivan, and Lori Myers — will be on site sharing their stories and how they are able to successfully transform their choice of mediums into unique sculptural works of art.

Vickie Morrow, Mosaics

Having spent most of her time in ceramics and mosaics, Vickie Morrow as of late, has been gravitating more and more toward found objects with history and sheen.  As evidenced in her work, she combines rust, patinas and zig zag shapes to create a new “salsa” series of work.

Vickie describes this direction as a creative departure from the detailed kitchen backsplashes where she spends so much of her time.  Vickie has exhibitions at Camelback Studio Tour and Hidden in the Hills Studio Tour and is represented at local galleries, including On the Edge Gallery in Scottsdale and Fountain Hills Artists’ Gallery in Fountain Hills.

To view Vickie’s work you can go to On The Edge Gallery’s website @ www.ontheedgegallery.com  or visit her website @ www.vickiemorrow.com/

Margaret Sullivan, Gourds

Inspired by the great Southwest, Margaret spends hours dreaming up creations using gourds uniquely formed at the hands of Mother Nature as her canvas.  With the help of pyrography, carving, dyes, paints, and a cornucopia of beads, precious stones and feathers, her gourds are turned into beautiful works of art.

Most known for her Kachinas and masks, she will tell you that she still does not have a specialty because of the broad scope of possibilities of her art.

Margaret's art is represented by On the Edge Gallery in Scottsdale, The Fountain Hills Artists' Gallery in Fountain Hills and in her home gallery.  She resides in Rio Verde, AZ and is a member of the American Gourd Society, the Arizona Gourd Society and the Verdes Art League. She is well known for her art workshops.

Lori Myers, Glass

Throughout her life, Lori has always pursued art. In high school, she turned her bedroom into a stained glass studio. Today, she continues to work in both oils and glass. Lori's paintings-- whether on glass or canvas--are a reflection of many influences such as her passion for travel, her love of color, and her interest in both current and past narratives on various cultures. Variety within the medium, combined with artistic freedom to explore new subjects and techniques, keeps the pursuit fresh and exciting. At the end of the day, Lori feels incredibly fortunate to do what she loves.

Find Unique Diverse Treasures at ON THE EDGE GALLERY During the Collector’s ArtWalk on January 28, 2016!

At On The Edge Gallery, you will find an unparalleled, diverse range of artwork created by some of the finest artists in Arizona. Join On The Edge Gallery during the “Collector’s ArtWalk” on Thursday, January 28, 2016, from 6 PM - 9 PM, as the Gallery spotlights and celebrates contemporary classical and representational artwork. We invite you to join us as we showcase the elegance and beauty of these works. “The “Collector’s ArtWalk” is an opportunity for art enthusiasts of all levels to share in the celebration of the arts,” states Katie Stearns, On The Edge Gallery Board President. “You will find affordable, high-quality treasures that you will be proud to include in your art collection.” On The Edge Gallery’s featured artists – Valerie Hildebrand, E.A. Hain-Meranto, and Katie Stearns — will be on site either demonstrating their creative processes so you can experience their techniques and skills first hand or will be discussing how they create their masterpieces.

Valerie Hildebrand, Batik on Paper

Throughout her school years, Valerie focused on her dream of becoming an artist. She carried a double major in college — theoretical mathematics and art with a focus on painting. Initially, Valerie’s career took her in the direction of computers, pushing her artistic endeavors to the side. It wasn’t until moving to Arizona in 2000 that Valerie was inspired to create art again. Instead of going back to painting, a good friend suggested she try stained glass. Valerie began to explore cold and warm techniques for working with glass and became proficient enough that a local glass shop asked her to join their staff of teachers. There she learned that she very much enjoyed facilitating the learning process and watching others find that spark of inspiration within them. Since Valerie never stops searching for new techniques and inspiration, she participated in a workshop for Batik on Paper that inspired a whole new direction for her. She went into an intense period of creativity, pushing the medium in her own direction and thoroughly enjoying the process. To view Valerie’s work you can go to On The Edge Gallery’s website @ www.ontheedgegallery.com or visit her website @ www.valeriehildebrand.com

E. A. Hain-Meranto, Oil Painter

Born in Chambersburg PA, Elizabeth moved to Phoenix Arizona in 1982. Her childhood, teen years, and adult life has centered around the Arts. After graduating from York Academy of Arts, Elizabeth moved to Arizona. She ran all aspects of the prominent Fine Art Gallery in Scottsdale for fifteen years. Then she opened her own gallery, Elizabeth Hain Gallery, on Pinnacle Peak and Pima Road, and ran it for over five years. After the Art Gallery business and raising four amazing children, Elizabeth returned to her passion of art. Having studied under renowned artists Virgil Sova, David Snyder, and Ted Fitzke, her interpretive landscapes in oil conveyed her impression of the desert’s beauty. Elizabeth’s visual and vast knowledge of the arts has been built over the past fifty years, and gives the viewer a glimpse of her love for the Arizona landscape. With the tremendous support of her family and husband, Sal, Elizabeth is now on the other side of fine arts, presenting her own artwork to the public. To view Elizabeth’s work you can go to On The Edge Gallery’s website @ www.ontheedgegallery.com or visit her website @ http://www.artistofthedesert.com

Katie Stearns, Oil Painter

“I picked up a paint brush in January of 2001 because I needed to live a more creative life,” says Katie. “I knew when my brush first swirled through the buttery soft pigment that I would paint for the rest of my life. But, I had no idea how quickly and thoroughly I would be enraptured, challenged, and fulfilled. For me, painting is pure joy. It’s intense. It’s difficult. It’s all consuming. Painting in a representational style allows me to express and share the intensity of how I feel. My paintings represent the essence of me. They represent how I see, experience, and interpret the beauty of the world.” Over the past fifteen years, Katie has studied extensively at Scottsdale Artists’ School with a variety of world-renown artists. Katie paints a variety of subjects in oil — still life, florals, landscapes, wildlife, pet portraits, and people! To view Katie’s work you can go to On The Edge Gallery’s website @ www.ontheedgegallery.com or visit her website @ www.stearnstudio.com
